At the tender age of twenty-one, Selah Sue imparts a developed sound truly her own. The Belgian says, “Musically speaking, I know what I want,” and that confidence translates into her soulful reggae melodies. There are no mixed emotions in citing her influences either. Without being said, a spiritual dexterity reigning in next to that of Lauryn Hill can be picked up

the second she drops a vocal. That unique emotion embodied by Sue’s voice hits a sweet soul spot that without a doubt rekindles memories of Hill and her slick raps. Worthy of her reggae idol, “This World” and internet-raved “Raggamuffin”–off her self-titled debut album released last year– revisit the rhythm and ragga-blues we’ve been missing since The Fugees.

Her career began amidst textbooks and puberty. While finishing high school, the zealous youngster hit local clubs on the weekend for performances after becoming addicted to the guitar. Orginally taking up ballet, Sue abandoned the dance studios for home-studios to record and publish songs on her Myspace. At that point, the seemingly unimaginable happened. Viral attention to her Myspace page led to the interest of and eventually record with Because Music, producer Meshell Ndegeocello, a collaboration with Cee-Lo Green for his own album, and a support slot with Prince himself.

Thank goodness: Destiny, and the internet, have brought us Selah Sue. Expect big things from this voice of soul.
