Photographer Robert Walker Captures Britain’s Only Desert

British born photographer Robert Walker’s latest project taken over a 4 year period captures the ever changing light and atmosphere of Britain’s only desert. “The Fifth Continent” was the name given to the area around Dungeness, Kent in the 1840’s by Rev. R Barham. When he said, “The World, according to the best geographers, is divided into Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Romney Marsh.”

Dungeness is home to 2 nuclear power stations, a miniature railway and is a site of special scientific interest. A handful of hardy individuals live and work there in a random cluster of wooden structures in various states of decomposition and as unpredictable as the weather. Some fish, some are artists ( the most notable being the late Derek Jarman ) many are simply escaping a life of convention.

All around are the remnants of a long gone economy. The hum of the power stations, the unrelenting wind and occasional blasts from the foghorn provide the soundtrack to a unique part of the world.
