Matthias Geiger Tide Series

An interesting concept by photographer Matthias Geiger’s. The Tide series concerns itself with the ebb and flow of people as they pass through time and place. Using a computer-based technique of layering the still images he shoots, Geiger erases the physical presence of the figures in his work, leaving just a trace of their forms in the landscape.

Artist Statement:

Tide is a series of images examining human presence in various locales. It is a play on the space-time continuum, reflecting the ebb and flow of people through specific locations. Photography’s capacity to depict a singular moment in time is extended within this series, by layering a series of porous images from various instances in time into coherent new compositions.

This technique allows past, present and future moments to appear simultaneously, reflecting the notion that each moment in time is a fabrication of our memories, our presence and our projections. This instantaneous perception of different moments collapses and unites the linear, sequential character of time.

The diminishing human presence and disembodiment of the human figures allows for objects and locales to become more predominant. Their ghostly presence invites a manifestation of the metaphysical. The outlines of the figures become representations of the boundaries of personal space and public space, internal and external worlds.

Each body becomes less distinct and merges with others, indicating a shared experience and a diminished individuality. The locations included in Tide are places of transit and momentary rest and depict locations in which their architecture determines how people navigate it and congregate in it.
