Your holiday really starts at Chiquila’s cute little port. Here it’s almost impossible to avoid the warm local Mexican vibe.
15 minute away on a small boat you arrive on Holbox Island – a care free, car free and well preserved paradise fishermen’s island about 2 hours north of Cancun. The golf cart ride (with your suitcase) through little sandy roads brings you to north side of the island where Casa Sandra hotel is located right on the beach.
At first impression Casa Sandra is rustic, simple and yet quite thoughtfully presented. The whole place feels more like a good friend’s elegant holiday home and less of a formal hotel. Bungalows and hammocks are scattered in between palm trees.
There’s a perfect size dipping pool with just enough shade all day, a sophisticated little restaurant and a gorgeous porch with uninterrupted views of the beach and the sea… The porch becomes the spot where your morning breakfast is enhanced by the quiet, gentle and slow pace of life.
40 steps later, There’s also a small bar with some hammocks and some palm tree leave covered day beds closer to the sea. Whether you’re sipping artisanal tequilas, doing your yoga moves or anything else, you have a sense of being alone and far away from everyday life.
For other days you have the option to go fishing just off the coast where your captain will turn into a Ceviche chef, transforming the fresh fish you just caught into delicious ceviche served in paper plates with a cold local beer.
Golf carts and bicycles are the easy quick way to get around this small island and visit it’s various spots – you can walk on long beaches and pick up shells or go to the various beach bars.

In the evening the center of the local village is a short walk away. The main square is filled with various food carts serving excellent authentic Mexican food.
While some of the local businesses are obviously geared towards the tourists, the town feels very authentic and full of locals coming out for a stroll or eating next to the food carts on plastic chairs and tables sprinkled around the main square.
Days and nights melt into each other at on Holbox and during your stay at Casa Sandra. The more you stay the more you want to stay. It’s comfortable, there’s no fuss and so what remains as the most memorable part of your trip is appreciation for the authenticity of the island and the warmth of its people.
Our other local favorite: Raices:
Right next to Casa Sandra you will find Raices, a local restaurant just a few feet from the sea serving the best local seafood prepared on a wood grill, fried or turned into Ceviche. Prices are extremely reasonable and the sunsets are not to be missed
