Jonathan Simkhai S/S 2015

Mesh-expert Jonathan Simkhai presented a feminine and fractured collection for SS’15 at Milk Studios, NYFW.

Inspired by photographs of smashed and fragmented pieces of glass, the designer applied jagged, geometric paneling to sheer mesh, offering a modern interpretation of lace.

Longer pencil skirt shapes, soft joggers and cropped bombers took on the designer’s new shattered glass effect, complete with sharply-cut hemlines.
A-line mini culottes and slim-fitting mid-calf skirt lengths prevailed with a mix of dresses and sporty layered separates.

As always with Simkhai, the balance of sheer and opaque paneling within the collection was its main focus. Seductively placed floral lace appliqué was broken up with strips of the designer’s ubiquitous basketball vest mesh. Décolletage, under-sleeves and mini-to-midi skirt lengths wee left as deliberate and daring translucent panels.

The inventive material mix in a palette of soft pink, icy pastel blue and optical white on black pitched the collection to a girl who seeks a clean sports luxe and delicately appliquéd couture look in equal measure.
