Rain Bottle by Nendo was a project designed for the Trend Exhibition space in the main area of Maison & Objet Paris, the biannual design fair.
The theme of the exhibition was “words” and asked the designers to consider the relationship between language and design. Like the eskimos have over fifty words for snow, the sensitive Japanese language have a dozen words for rain. Design studio Nendo investigated the term of rain by illustrating it through clear acrylic bottles, each containing a different nuance of rain.
Terms like “Kirisame”, “biu”, and “kosame” refer to different degrees of drizzle, while “niwaka-ame” is a sudden downpour. Another one is “Mizore” is sleet, and “yudachi” is evening rain. “Kisame” drips from the ends of tree branches and “kaiu” is a mix of rain and pollen. The project wants to convey the depth of Japanese culture and its relationship with nature.
