Not your Grandmother’s Silk Scarf
On May 2, 2011 Hermes introduced the world to their freshly renovated Madison Ave. flagship store by unveiling an entire new floor (designed by Parisian architectural firm RDAI), which adds 2,100 square feet to the shop. Filling the space will be the classic Hermes stand-bys, such as scarves and fragrances, but accompanying them will be something both new for the company, and also innovative for the luxury fashion industry as a whole: a customizable silk scarf (also “Gavroche” pocket square and “Twilly” ribbon) counter. While the idea of offering a customizable product is not new, a high-end brand offering the option for their most iconic products is. With all the choices available (17 designs, 54 color combinations, 30 silk yarn colors, and 2 different fonts), there are literally thousands of possible outcomes, bringing new meaning to the term exclusivity. Of course prices vary and turn around time for a finished, personalized scarf is one to two weeks.
