Helmut Lang S/S 2013

It’s not every fashion week you hear a collection is inspired by shrimp and Dungeness crabs. But behind the modern pieces of Helmut Lang’s latest Spring/Summer 2013 collection lies pictures of crustaceans and all things under the sea. Husband-and-wife design tandem Michael and Nicole Colovos share that “we were thinking about life under the ocean. We came across these pictures of crabs and shrimp… they were fabulous, glowing, and translucent”.

In their deft heads and hands, this resulted in directional yet completely wearable pieces. Classic staples, like leather jackets, pants, and shirt dresses, get reworked with slick techno fabrics that ripple softly over the body. Textures and colors play together through subtle details. And most importantly for the warmer season, loose silhouettes and off-color hues successfully deliver the carefree, effortless feel Helmut Lang is known for.
