so basically the journalist is interviewing the editor (lady) and the photographer (guy) about the concept of the editorial.
in israel in some areas women are forced to seat in the back of the buss to create separation between men and women, in some circles they are not allowed to speak publicly and sing. in Jerusalem and some orthodox areas in other cities women are photoshopped out of signs and posters (fashion brands, movies, services ecc..).
this editorial is talking about a very hot topic nowadays in the israeli news, making a statement that a woman’s sexuality is something to adore and not to hide at the back of a bus. the photographer said he is shooting a lot of sexy women and has no trouble controlling his urges ans should be the orthodox Jews who claim that women make them betray their belief (and that’s why they are trying to hide and repress women under the excuse of modesty and respect)

Wow, beautiful images! Love how societies frame female sexuality as uncontrollable monstrosity, much like the plague.

definitely an interesting and provocative concept, and, I think, an important statement against suppression of women in the public sphere.

only thing is, the photographer’s comments kind of make you think..

“I think women are a wonderful thing, and especially especially like, because of the things they do for the world, for men, since what are they without them…yes, women are very strong, they work very hard, yes they have to, they have many demands on them, but its all from a place of expectation, that same place of giving her credit, making the picture even better…”

and on a possibility for less fashion that doesn’t exploit women’s sexuality:
“Sexuality is something important. Why hide it. Like, sell what you have, they always sell it anyways. Let’s take pleasure in women; why hide them..”

so while the editorial’s critique is important, I’m not sure that the society it’s coming from is completely devoid of sexism and/or oppression either…

    Any thoughts?

In the video below, Maya Pollack, editor of the
Belle Mode magazine discusses the manipulation of harsh boundaries placed upon
women on the Ultra-Orthodox, Hasidic sect by the juxtaposition of modesty and
“closed” dress sense to immodest and highly seductive dress.

Both Maya and the photographer want to express
this issue in its strongest form by flaunting the women and showing her off in
a provocative sense. Maya’s hope is that the message will be successfully
portrayed. ”This is a very popular topic that people are very
cautious not to engage and we decided not to be cautious, from my point of view
women deserve credit for all they have done for the world.” Lior
    Nordman, photographer of the shoot.

The Israeli fashion magazine Belle Mode published this provocative/controversial editorial as a way to protest against the infringement on the rights of women on religious grounds. Photographed by Lior Nordman, there is very few credits and info about the shoot, but the concept is explained on the video below (in Hebrew, so hard to understand if you dont speak the language…) If any of you would like to enlighten us about it, feel free to comment below.
