Extremadura Off the Grid House by Abaton Architects

Madrid Studio, Abaton Architects have completely transformed an abandoned, derelict stable into an impressive family dream home. Located in Extremadura, a remote part of Western Spain’s countryside, a key challenge faced was the absence of a reliable electrical connection and water supply. To overcome this challenge Abaton has embraced renewable energy sources. Luckily, a natural water source flows through the property. Beyond the rustic stone façade and barn-board doors lies a surprisingly contemporary interior.

It is the perfect example of historic meets modern, evidenced by the homes’ striking mix of limestone floors, exposed concrete walls, battered wooden ceiling beams and well-worn stone. The expansive floor-to-ceiling windows showcase the beautiful outdoor scene and promote circulation of the fresh country air. This perfected balance of old and new promotes a distinct sense of nostalgia; conjuring memories of when this old stable was once utilized and full of life.
