Exhibitions & Openings for the Week of May 30

art weekly may

This week in Art Weekly we are traveling to Rome, Paris, London and Los Angeles for this week’s top opening picks. Enjoy!

Kim Squaglia — “New Paintings” — Los Angeles, CA

Kim Squaglia’s paintings are created out of many layers of carefully rendered coats of resin. Using saturated colors and geometric patterning she creates a unique sense of depth and movement that comes through in every brush stroke. Stylistically, a touch of mod from the 60’s and loud color blasts from 80’s round out her aesthetic perfectly. The exhibition opens June 1st and is certainly one not to be missed, enjoy!

George Billis Gallery

June 1st – July 7th, 2013

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 1st, 5 –  8 PM

Mario Merz — “Mario Merz” — Paris, France

Art Weekly previously covered the work of this famed artist’s wife Marisa Merz and this exhibition makes it clear that they are an artistic match made in heaven. Mario Merz’ work is at times extreme in size and scale and usually plays with various mediums,  shapes and colors to create a larger than life effect. I am excited to see what he has in store for us at Gagosian Gallery next!

Gerhard Richter — “Tapestries” — London, UK

Gerhard Richter is one of the most successful artists in the history of contemporary art and this exhibition will leave you understanding exactly why. Known as the top-selling living artist, this German born painter’s work reaches back to the work of Picasso and other greats while remaining contemporary with his edgy photorealistic leanings and mixture of styles. Prepare yourself for a true treat.

With an artistic practice that spans over forty years, Viola continues to create work that challenges the spirit, the eyes and the mind. This show will be on view through the end of July so there will be plenty of time to catch it in its entirety. I highly suggest you visit and revisit this show as more and more is revealed with each fresh viewing of his work.

Nothing! Gagosian Gallery is proud to present this very special exhibitions of neo-classical structures by this famed and gifted sculptor. Thomas Houseago’s work touches on Cubism, Futurism and other art historical movements while still maintaining it’s contemporary cool. Wonderful.
