Dine in PRISON

PRISON BY KARINA WICIAK

One would hope to never experience eating behind a set of prison bars. Unless of course, it is at Polish designer Karina Wicia’s restaurant Poczekalia (which means ’waiting room’ in Polish). Emulating a prison cell, this conceptual restaurant positions itself somewhere between interior design and scenography. Whilst still only a rendering, the concept goes beyond the aesthetic; “not only the interior but also the name of the restaurant itself is a kind of metaphor, because the prison itself can be euphemistically described as a kind of waiting room” shares the designer.

A coherent jailhouse theme flows throughout; reminiscent of prison jumpsuits, orange fabrics punctuate the monochrome palette whilst a vertical orientation dominates the furniture offering a connection back to the bars of prison cells.

The finer details are impeccable; hanging lamps in the shape of handcuffs, cuff and key light fixtures and even coiled ropes dangling out the windows offering an ‘escape route’. Dramatic and theatrical, it will be a true design destination when this render becomes a reality.
