Digital Print Fashion at Phoenix Art Museum

Over the past few years, the innovative use and application of digitally-rendered printing in fashion has brought designers like Mary Katrantzou, Peter Pilotto and Basso and Brooke to the forefront of our attention. It’s paved the way for some of the most exciting developments we’ve seen in editorial, the fashion market, the textile industry, the red carpet and beyond. For a further look into this important trend, is Phoenix Art Museum’s current exhibition Digital Print Fashion, on view through July 14th in their Ellman Fashion Gallery.

“With Digital Print Fashion, I was excited to explore what was behind the explosion of bold and colorful printed designs that have been on the runways for the last several seasons.  Digital Age technologies are fostering designers’ creative freedom by making it quicker and easier to use and manipulate a variety of images and transfer them to cloth” says Dennita Sewell, Curator of Fashion Design for the museum.  Sewell continues, “I selected a range of looks that show early experiential uses of the technology by innovative designers such as Issey Miyake and Alexander McQueen to designers whose style has become defined by their whole hearted adoption of it.”  Such an example is a Katrantzou dress, for which the designer vividly rendered a print of a koi pond, extracted from images of a famous  connoisseur’s collection.
