Thanks to the Dieline for the tip !
Industrial design student Andrew Kim created this very cool concept of some square Coke Bottles. Not a stupid idea for the iconic bottle, since you gain in space for the shipping and for the recycling. Let see if Coke will like it…

Superb Design process.
I`m convinced that most of the public would reject it at 1st time cuz the actual Coke’s bottle shape `ve been part of our daily culture for a long time.
On the other hand, people (like me), concerned with the day after tomorrow, would appreciate a well designed bottle like that.
Congrats for Andrew!
Cheers,
I like it.
Although I’m not totally convinced that a bottle made from sugar cane is the best idea, especially for long term storage. :\
So, when’re the square cans gonna come out? …because those cylindrical cans are taking up lots more space than they should. ![]()

Great concept, and very well thought out. But it’s ugly as hell and coke would never sacrifice their patented bottle shape. The smartest part about this design is the collapse feature; that’s something that could be applied to any bottle shape, but good luck securely fitting this small square bottle into cup holders in cars. Great design process though.
I Love this idea! I’m in my mid 20′s and I would stop buying the old soda bottles all together if this came out. And I know a ton of my friends that would too. I’m sure pepsi would be right behind coke once word gets out how huge this will hit the market for the average college students at least. Now to get the car makers to fix the shape of our cup holders hahaha.
This is absolutely amazing anyone that has common sense would buy this either because they think its cool or because they are concerned about the world today. Amazziiiiing
-It’s ugly!
-No one wants to stack their Coke!
-If anything just make the regular coke bottle collapsible.
-Cool idea….Keep on trying.
Brilliant! I’m bored of the same old coke bottles.
It’s time for CHANGE.
yay!
I like the design a lot! Although I agree with the people who say Coke would probably never give up their classic bottle design, I think your design is sleek and would make organizing a refrigerater much much easier. Great job!
Coke still is poison for the human body no matter how ‘green’ this design is. Obesity, diabetes, heart disease, loss of bone density etc. are all linked to consuming this type of waste.
Yeah, it’s pretty. But how is going to withstand the pressure from the carbonation? Oh, right. IT WON’T.
I actually showed this page to a friend of mine who works at Coke. He said that it would never happen for the following reasons:
1.) Coke’s bottle shape and design is patented.
2.) The reason Coke’s bottle shape is important (more than iconic Americana) is because it is built that the carbonation doesn’t pop the cap off and explode all over the place.
He told me this bottle shape wouldn’t hold up to any of their carbonated drinks, but it could work for their water =/
Very cool. I think it would go over well the next time coke needs to reinvent their image
I wonder if i’m the only one who instantly thought of putting a bowlpiece on the cap and smoking out of this like the bukket airless bong xD
Cupholders aren’t square. Dumb.
I don’t usually comment on these things but as an engineer this wouldn’t work with any sort of carbonated beverage. Squares don’t deal with pressure very well, if you actually wanted to produce this you would have to use substantially more plastic to make the walls take the stress without deforming. These bottles are a very pretty design, but that’s it they aren’t actually functional/green in a lot of ways. Not ergonomic, would use more plastic…some of the problems he “solves”, like the shipping issue aren’t really a problem. This guy has a promising future as a designer but he needs to research how the things he’s re-designing actually work and why they are the way they are now if he wants to be successful.
will not work
modern soda pop can or bottle
is a small, light weight, thin wall pressure vessel
a square pressure vessel
made as thin as todays round cans and bottles would deform in seconds
would need much more material to package
the same amount of product as a round bottle
square bottles work for products that are not under pressure
like milk
not for beer or soda pop
I cannot believe people are willing to sacrifice the beneficial component of the design for the way it looks. It is not “ugly”…it is a pretty modern design, in my opinion, however it is very sad to hear that people would rather buy sodas because of the bottle’s design rather than the flavor. This is a more efficient and environment-friendly design and I really hope companies implement them!
Coca-cola would never do this… but I hope someone does!
I love it! CocaCola Co. would be foolish to ignore this. I agree they will probably be reluctant to give up their classic contoured bottle design. I am a faithful Coke drinker Pepsi were to use this design instead of Coke, I would switch!
One simple question: how are you going to make these? Are they molded, cast, cut, or …?
A nice idea, but hard to make. The savings of material may not offset the additional processing time/machines/resources.
This is pretty cool! Like the first poster said, it would be hard to introduce to our culture… we’re people of habit. But I also love the idea of using less plastics, using plant-based plastics and promoting recycling. Nicely done. With the right promotions, it could catch on. I hope they pick up on this design.
The bottles should be made with HEMP OIL!!! Look it up, there is NOTHING more environmentally friendly than using hemp oil for plastics.
I love this idea…….just not for Coca-Cola. Maybe present it to other companies who do juices or bottled water. I think that bottled waters such as Ethos or Smart Water could use this design. I really hope that some one picks it up. It’s an amazing and refreshing new idea.
Nice design … hope coca cola like it!
Thank you so much for having such a beautiful mind!
I was wondering … and I thought that was what you had come up wtih at first … aren’t hexagons more stackable? And a hexagonal bottle might feel more, um, round and grippy in the hand ….?
This will never work. It creates stress points at every corner. The bottles would start to leak in shipment. A rounded bottle distributes stress evenly, rectangular bottles would split.
There’s a reason things are done the way they’re done. Industrial Design students aren’t smarter than the 102nd biggest company in the world (as rated by Forbes Global 2000).
Good stuff only that its too complicated.Well that goodness i have cut back on coca-cola consumption for sugar reasons.
Brilliant!
Wow, you people on this comment thread are so uplifting and positive! ….not.
I sense some jealousy coming from a few of you folks. Too bad you didn’t think of this awesome design yourselves, regardless of its functionality.
This isn’t new, I’m sorry. This whole cubist, space-saving, eco-friendly spiel has been used in Japan for a decade, ItoEn uses it in their Tea’s Tea in the US. They actually rounded the corners of the bottles, creating an octagon to reduce stress on the bottles.
On the other hand, while it needs tweeks, it’s not complicated, it saves the corporation money by reducing waste and inefficiency, it’s a great product, and it DOES have the potential to decrease the ecological footprint of the already out-of-control American conspicuous consumer.
GREAT IDEA ANDREW!! I love it
Let me know if you need some sweet ad type pictures.
I like it lol, reminds me of stuff out of sciene fiction films. they look really cool and makes sense lol DO it COLA DO IT!
And what abt all the ergonomics and refrigerator friendliness?
I agree this is a supply side revolution but how abt taking demand into consideration?
Or have we forgotten that “Customer is king!” ?
But Excellent industrial design! Will work like butter for some other B2B industry – just please leave coke alone ;O)
Cheers!

Cupholders aren’t square. Dumb.”
And the small-minded “I can’t think beyond the obvious” fool strikes again. Firstly, a square bottle will not roll around so you don’t even really NEED a cup holder, and secondly how is it a flaw in the bottle design that something else DESIGNED FOR A DIFFERENT SHAPED CONTAINER does not fit it?! If we follow your logic we’ll never change anything because there’s always something else that currently uses it the way it is.
I like them, they are super unique. I don’t think this design will ever pass the manufacturing test but they are cool all the same. My favourite feature is the off centre lip, pretty slick.
Je ne pense pas c’est laid.
Je l’aime! ![]()
First off, I love the new Green design. ![]()
I’m commenting though to point out to Steve, that current bottles don’t roll away either. We use cup holders so they don’t slide. And I can say for certain [look at the side-by-side comparison of new/old bottles] that the square ones will fit into the cup holders we have now.
I really like this design. I hope Coke takes it up, it makes more sense and is considerably sleeker. Good luck dude.
I’m not trying to be rude but it seems that some of you need to take a physics class.
Pointed out by so many before and blatantly ignored; A square container can not handle the pressure of carbonated drinks without using more materials.
Cup holders are round. They keep drinks in place. A soda will not magically stay put because it has a square bottom. It will slide around just as much as a round bottle.
So in the end the design appears green because it promises to use less material. It just won’t work with carbonated drinks. It isn’t small minded to do a little math on the pressures exerted on the bottle.
Fiji water already uses the square bottle, but the collapsible feature is pretty brilliant! I also agree with using hemp instead of plastic, making it biodegradable as well.
I for one, LOVE THIS.
I can definitely see my generation loving this design.
I think the NEW Design is Perfect. Coke has toyed with this concept for decades not only from a Market share perspective but actually now from a MORE ecological perspective. The design reflects the product branding, and does not interfere with the content of the packaging. I see Pepsi doing the Same very shortly..
Let me get this right. The idea is to make the Coke bottle out of sugar cane while at the same time we are making the coke itself with high fructose corn syrup? Wow I’m at a lost for words. I got an Idea, forget the bottle, and use the sugar cane to make sugar to replace the crap in the soft drink.
“No one wants to stack their coke”
Bwahahahaha, you think that was the point? Consumers stacking coke?
There’s a picture of a massive shipping container in the article for a reason. They can now ship probably 25-40% more coke in a single shipment. That cuts down the number of trips by the same amount.
They sell 1.2 Billion 8oz drinks a DAY. What do you think the shipping costs are? You really don’t think Coke are interested in getting say 15% of that back by paying a designer a few hundred thousand?
Not to mention resuppliers, wholesalers, middlemen, etc that benefit.
This is a terrible idea.
Plastics are not very rigid. Particularly the ultra thin plastics used in soda bottles. You will have to use a much thicker layer of plastic for the bottle to keep high pressure carbonated soda in that cube shape.
there is a reason soda bottles are shaped the way they are now. This guy is no genius.
I love how no one reads any of the other comments…
Many people, including engineers and people who work for Coke, have said this won’t be optional for carbonated beverages.
However, I would buy water out of this like no tomorrow.
i love this, cocacola company should really try this. though it doesnt look good, i think if people are informed about this, they will buy that bottle instead of the (prettier) OLD one. i would!
idiot, yeah, i’m sure coke never thought of square bottles
Corner to corner, the square bottle is as wide as the round bottle. No need to worry about it fitting in drinks holders.

This is amazing technology - definitely the future!2
Is they are all made by metal.3
very funny4
I will have a try,and i believe it will be very delicious.....5
It must be a peace music,i guess.6
And she lives in Apt 69, nice touch.7
Are you serious? I'm usually a fan of the stuff you put up here, but just cause she's a friend of Trendland doesn't mean you have to be completely uncritical about this commercial. The objectification of the woman, and also the patronizing of the men, is so sad to me.. it's like a commercial from the 50's?? For Samsung to promote a Smart TV with such a medieval view on gender roles.. I guess the only smart thing about this really is the TV..8
A great work i loved the post.9
Hey there! I just tried out the new Kokorico, by Jean Paul Gautier and also made a review for it, here in Brazil. I really loved the Patchouli like scent.10
