Recent Royal College of Art graduate Jeongwong Ji is questioning the archetypes of sleek electronics by inventing a bio plastic casing made from crab shells. Her exploration has resulted in expressive and tactile products: an alarm clock, humidifier, computer trackpad, torch and WiFi router.

The unusual material called “Crustic” was developed through trial and error with an organic water and glycerin mixture made from the Chinese Mitten crab, selected for its combination of strength and flexibility. It’s also a highly unwanted crustacean in the River Thames, now transformed into a valuable resource. The curing process takes much longer than conventional plastics and distorts even though held in geometric moulds, but it is completely non-toxic and makes each manufactured item unique.

It’s clear Jeongwong Ji’s work challenges the aesthetics of every day electronics, it also redefines mass production, offers non-toxic solutions for factory workers and the environment, making it a perfect example of how design can lead the future and create meaningful change.
