Anne Truitt: Threshold

A exquisite immersion of minimalism, color, and form is on display for just a few more days at Chelsea’s Matthew Marks gallery, who bring new life through careful installation of artist Anne Truitt’s sculptures, paintings and drawings from the 1970s. The artist, who in her lifetime had solo exhibitions at Andre Emmerich Gallery and the Whitney Museum of Art, to name a few, carefully created the sculptures with a labor-intensive process involving hand-applying several layers of paint then carefully sanding them.  In her paintings, attention is drawn to steady brushstrokes, and on display for the first time, drawings by Truitt.  Accompanying the exhibition is a illustrated hardcover book by Anne M. Wagner, which includes writings of the late artist. Of Truitt’s work, Wagner writes, “the elusive delicacy of their execution somehow creates the impressions of a spatial expanse.”
